Hike a scenic adventure in Suðuroy Hvannhagi, is a remote valley that beckons adventurous souls. Its center piece is the serene Lake Hvannavatn, cradled amidst steep mountains.
A breathtaking view from the top, gazing northeast towards Lítla Dímun, Stóra Dímun, and Sandoy. The hike from the charming village of Tvøroyri to this hidden paradise takes approximately 3 hours. Trail details:

The trail winds through the picturesque surroundings of Ásmundarstakkur. Expect steep cliffs,magnificent Sea Stack and the dramatic landscape owes its form to the relentless erosion byNorth Atlantic waves. This hike can be choosen to explore either from the village Sandvík or Hvalba.

The hike starts at Nes, a charming village in Suðuroy. We will follow the cairn path through the Káragjógv cleft, a dramatic gorge that offers rugged beauty, with steep cliffs and unique rock formations. Then we continue southward, passing through the stunning Vatnsdalur valley, which Is surrounded by majestic mountains and offers breathtaking views. The trail concludes in the picturesque village of Tvøroyri. As we reach Tvøroyri, we will take a moment to appreciate the journey and try to dine in some local cafés.

• Estimated Completion Time: Around 3 hours, but with stop in vatnsdalur around 4 hours.
•Difficulty Level: difficult in start then moderate.
Route type: Steep and demanding to walk up along Káragjógv, but apart from this, the ground is flat and easy to walk.

The Coalmines: A unique experience,as you’ll get the chance to learn about the miners’ resilience, the challenges they faced, and the symbiotic relationship between man and nature. You will feel the coolness of the mine walls, hear the distant echoes of pickaxes, and marvel at the ingenuity that sustained this community.
Pirates, Turkagravirnar The salty sea breeze will carry you back to the 17th century. Hvalba, once a thriving fishing and trading hub, fell victim to marauding pirates. The year 1629 witnessed a cataclysmic event—the infamous pirate attack that scarred the village forever. Nearly 300 pirates met their watery end, swallowed by the unforgiving sea. Their final resting place—the Turkagravirnar or The Turks’ Graves—lies adjacent to the beach, a somber reminder of both villainy and retribution.
Note: The tour may include uneven terrain, so wear comfortable shoes and an adventurous spirit.
Upon arrival to Suðuroy, you’ll be picked up by a local guide from the ferry port and will be headed toward the destinations which you have chosen from one of our tour plan. After that you will enjoy the village Hvalba, the most beautiful village in Suðuroy. Throughout the tour, our knowledgeable guide will walk around with you and reveal hidden gems—the secret viewpoints, coalmines and Turkish pirates graves”Turkagravirnar”. You will also get the chance to stop at local café and try some delicious snacks. At the end of the tour, your local guide will drive you back to the ferry port where the ferry Smyril departs.
